School trips in Gran Canaria: discover ‘Farmer for a Day’ with subsidised rates and transport

This school year, La Jaira de Ana wants to make it easier than ever for schools across Gran Canaria to step outside the classroom. That’s why we’re launching a special edition of our flagship activity, Visita a la granja (“Farm Visit”), where pupils become “Granjerx for a day,” with reduced rates thanks to the Granjas Escuelas grant, plus a promotion that covers part of the students’ transport costs. A school excursion at our farm isn’t just an outing — it’s a full morning in which children learn, hands-on and through participation, where food comes from and why caring for the Canary Islands’ primary sector matters. Over two decades dedicated to nature-based education Granjerx por un día didn’t appear out of nowhere: La Jaira de Ana began as a project in 2002 and, since 2018, has taken shape as a family-run agricultural venture in Agüimes. Behind every school visit lie years of work driven by the same purpose: showcasing the importance of the primary sector to Canarian culture and society, through hands-on experiences, environmental workshops, and real contact with animals and the land. That track record is what lets us tailor every excursion to the group visiting us: we know which workshop works best for which age, how to organise a group of 50 pupils or just 10, and how to turn three hours on the farm into learning that stays with pupils well beyond September. We don’t improvise the experience — we’ve been refining it year after year. What pupils experience during Visita a la granja as Granjerx por un día During the visit, each school group will be able to: Explore our livestock, agricultural and production facilities. Get an intuitive understanding of the island’s local and organic production processes. Enjoy a hands-on workshop linked to sustainability, adapted to their age group. The visit lasts 3 hours, with the option to extend it for €60 per additional hour. One workshop included, chosen by age Each school selects the workshop that best suits its pupils: Ages 3–6: Vegetable Garden Workshop. Ages 6–9: Vegetable Garden Workshop or Recycling Workshop. Ages 9+: Vegetable Garden Workshop, Natural Soap Workshop, or Recycling Workshop. Additional services to round out the day School lunch: €8.50 per pupil (IGIC not included). Cheese-making workshop: €17 per pupil. Every child makes — and takes home — their own cheese (IGIC not included). Milking workshop: €10 per pupil, available at 9:00 a.m. (IGIC not included). Why learning outdoors makes a difference Stepping outside the classroom isn’t just a change of scenery. Direct contact with animals, plants and real-world processes sparks curiosity, improves retention of what’s learned, and reinforces values like respect, care and responsibility — in a way no screen or textbook ever could. On a school trip to La Jaira de Ana, pupils don’t memorise concepts — they live them. They dig into the soil in the Vegetable Garden Workshop, understand the material cycle in the Recycling Workshop, or discover where the soap they use every day comes from in the Natural Soap Workshop. That active learning connects with the primary sector, sustainability, and the island’s local and organic production in a way that feels close and tangible. A start of the school year with motivation from day one September is often a month of fresh starts: new routines, new timetables, and, often, little emotional connection to what’s ahead. Scheduling the school excursion in the first few weeks changes that dynamic. For pupils, knowing they’ll be leaving the classroom to touch animals, work in the vegetable garden, or make their own cheese is a real reason to start the year with enthusiasm. For teachers, it’s a way to introduce content on natural sciences, sustainability or the primary sector experientially — even before opening the first textbook. And for families, it brings the peace of mind that the year’s first outing has a clear educational purpose, in a safe, well-cared-for environment. Rates with the Granjas Escuelas 2026 grant Thanks to this grant, this school year we’re able to offer special prices for schools, based on the number of pupils: Prices exclude IGIC. To benefit from the grant, the school must complete the visit’s supporting document, signed and stamped. Subsidised places are limited — up to the first 37 visits, allocated in order of booking confirmation. Up to €100 in transport support We know transport is one of the main barriers to organising a school trip. That’s why La Jaira de Ana subsidises 50% of transport costs, up to a maximum of €100 per school. For example: Transport costing €160 → La Jaira contributes €80 · the school pays €80. Transport costing €200 → La Jaira contributes €100 · the school pays €100. Transport costing €300 → La Jaira contributes €100 · the school pays €200. This support can be combined with the Granjas Escuelas reduced rate while both remain available, and is allocated in order of booking until the funds set aside for the campaign run out. We handle the transport booking with the coach company ourselves and put together a combined quote covering the full price of the visit and the transfer. How the booking process works Payment is made in two parts: 50% in advance and the remaining 50% on the day of the visit (card, cash or bank transfer). If the school needs an invoice, this must be communicated before payment is made, so IGIC can be applied correctly. It cannot be issued after that point. Direct access to the farm is limited to coaches with up to 33 seats. Larger vehicles must drop pupils off at a point 5–10 minutes’ walk from our facilities. Who this excursion is for Granjerx por un día is designed for schools across Gran Canaria looking for a school outing with genuine educational content: the primary sector, sustainability, and direct contact with animals, adapted to every stage from early years through to secondary school.
