School trips in Gran Canaria: discover ‘Farmer for a Day’ with subsidised rates and transport

This school year, La Jaira de Ana wants to make it easier than ever for schools across Gran Canaria to step outside the classroom. That’s why we’re launching a special edition of our flagship activity, Visita a la granja (“Farm Visit”), where pupils become “Granjerx for a day,” with reduced rates thanks to the Granjas Escuelas grant, plus a promotion that covers part of the students’ transport costs. A school excursion at our farm isn’t just an outing — it’s a full morning in which children learn, hands-on and through participation, where food comes from and why caring for the Canary Islands’ primary sector matters. Over two decades dedicated to nature-based education Granjerx por un día didn’t appear out of nowhere: La Jaira de Ana began as a project in 2002 and, since 2018, has taken shape as a family-run agricultural venture in Agüimes. Behind every school visit lie years of work driven by the same purpose: showcasing the importance of the primary sector to Canarian culture and society, through hands-on experiences, environmental workshops, and real contact with animals and the land. That track record is what lets us tailor every excursion to the group visiting us: we know which workshop works best for which age, how to organise a group of 50 pupils or just 10, and how to turn three hours on the farm into learning that stays with pupils well beyond September. We don’t improvise the experience — we’ve been refining it year after year. What pupils experience during Visita a la granja as Granjerx por un día During the visit, each school group will be able to: Explore our livestock, agricultural and production facilities. Get an intuitive understanding of the island’s local and organic production processes. Enjoy a hands-on workshop linked to sustainability, adapted to their age group. The visit lasts 3 hours, with the option to extend it for €60 per additional hour. One workshop included, chosen by age Each school selects the workshop that best suits its pupils: Ages 3–6: Vegetable Garden Workshop. Ages 6–9: Vegetable Garden Workshop or Recycling Workshop. Ages 9+: Vegetable Garden Workshop, Natural Soap Workshop, or Recycling Workshop. Additional services to round out the day School lunch: €8.50 per pupil (IGIC not included). Cheese-making workshop: €17 per pupil. Every child makes — and takes home — their own cheese (IGIC not included). Milking workshop: €10 per pupil, available at 9:00 a.m. (IGIC not included). Why learning outdoors makes a difference Stepping outside the classroom isn’t just a change of scenery. Direct contact with animals, plants and real-world processes sparks curiosity, improves retention of what’s learned, and reinforces values like respect, care and responsibility — in a way no screen or textbook ever could. On a school trip to La Jaira de Ana, pupils don’t memorise concepts — they live them. They dig into the soil in the Vegetable Garden Workshop, understand the material cycle in the Recycling Workshop, or discover where the soap they use every day comes from in the Natural Soap Workshop. That active learning connects with the primary sector, sustainability, and the island’s local and organic production in a way that feels close and tangible. A start of the school year with motivation from day one September is often a month of fresh starts: new routines, new timetables, and, often, little emotional connection to what’s ahead. Scheduling the school excursion in the first few weeks changes that dynamic. For pupils, knowing they’ll be leaving the classroom to touch animals, work in the vegetable garden, or make their own cheese is a real reason to start the year with enthusiasm. For teachers, it’s a way to introduce content on natural sciences, sustainability or the primary sector experientially — even before opening the first textbook. And for families, it brings the peace of mind that the year’s first outing has a clear educational purpose, in a safe, well-cared-for environment. Rates with the Granjas Escuelas 2026 grant Thanks to this grant, this school year we’re able to offer special prices for schools, based on the number of pupils: Prices exclude IGIC. To benefit from the grant, the school must complete the visit’s supporting document, signed and stamped. Subsidised places are limited — up to the first 37 visits, allocated in order of booking confirmation. Up to €100 in transport support We know transport is one of the main barriers to organising a school trip. That’s why La Jaira de Ana subsidises 50% of transport costs, up to a maximum of €100 per school. For example: Transport costing €160 → La Jaira contributes €80 · the school pays €80. Transport costing €200 → La Jaira contributes €100 · the school pays €100. Transport costing €300 → La Jaira contributes €100 · the school pays €200. This support can be combined with the Granjas Escuelas reduced rate while both remain available, and is allocated in order of booking until the funds set aside for the campaign run out. We handle the transport booking with the coach company ourselves and put together a combined quote covering the full price of the visit and the transfer. How the booking process works Payment is made in two parts: 50% in advance and the remaining 50% on the day of the visit (card, cash or bank transfer). If the school needs an invoice, this must be communicated before payment is made, so IGIC can be applied correctly. It cannot be issued after that point. Direct access to the farm is limited to coaches with up to 33 seats. Larger vehicles must drop pupils off at a point 5–10 minutes’ walk from our facilities. Who this excursion is for Granjerx por un día is designed for schools across Gran Canaria looking for a school outing with genuine educational content: the primary sector, sustainability, and direct contact with animals, adapted to every stage from early years through to secondary school. Frequently asked questions What’s included in the price of the visit? It includes access to the farm,
Innovation and tradition: Anabel’s Quesitos win Best Image and Presentation at Agrocanarias 2025

In La Jaira de Ana, we work every day to honor the Canarian tradition, taking care of our land and our animals. That effort has been rewarded with an award that makes us immensely happy and validates our philosophy: our ‘Los Quesitos de Anabel’ have been honored with the distinction for the Best Image and Presentation in the prestigious Official Agrocanarias Cheese Contest 2025, and we have also been awarded the Bronze for packaging design in the prestigious Pentawards 2025! The Packaging that Connects with the Essence of La Jaira de Ana Packaging is not just a wrapper; it’s the first impression, it’s the way we present our soul. When you see a picture of a cheese, I want you to know exactly where it comes from and who produces it. The Secret Behind the Success: Photographing Our Jairas The winning design reflects exactly who we are: an honest, family project deeply connected with our animals. The secret of this winning image is them: our jairas (goats). The design, developed by the IRÜBI studio, uses real photographs of our free-roaming goats on a clean background, identifying each variety with a bright color. It is a declaration of principles: transparency and animal welfare. We want you, when you pick up ‘Los Quesitos de Anabel’, to feel like you are taking a piece of our farm to your table. This design is a tribute to them, the true producers of the raw material we love so much. Agrocanarias 2025: A Seal of Canarian Quality and Commitment The Official Agrocanarias Cheese Contest is the highest reference for quality and excellence within our Archipelago. Being recognized in this contest is a validation of the quality of our products, made with premium raw materials in our cheesemaking facility in Agüimes. What Does Winning the Best Image and Presentation Award Mean? This specific award highlights the strategic design and communication capacity of the packaging. It doesn’t just reward beauty or creativity, but the ability to distinguish the Canarian product at the point of sale. For us, it means we have effectively communicated our values: respect for the animal, local production, and the young, innovative spirit of La Jaira de Ana. As pointed out by the Councillor of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, design and packaging are crucial for consumers to distinguish the products of our agri-food sector. We are proud to contribute to the visibility and prestige of Canarian production. La Jaira de Ana: Beyond Cheese, A Responsible Tourism Model La Jaira de Ana was born in 2002 and redefined in 2020 with a clear mission: to generate a positive impact on people and our environment. We want society, especially families and younger generations, to understand the importance of the primary sector. Animal Welfare and Environmental Education as Pillars Our experiences are focused on direct contact with nature: Environmental Education: We offer school excursions, workshops, and summer camps with rural and environmental activities. Animal Welfare: Our animals live in an environment designed for their well-being. Activities such as the Milking Workshop (Taller de Ordeño) or the Fostering/Sponsorship of a Jaira (Apadrinamiento de una Jaira) foster respect and affection for rural life. Aligned with SDGs and Local Consumption We are a project firmly committed to sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our model promotes local consumption, respect for biodiversity, and cultural roots (arraigo cultural). Thanks to this commitment, we already hold recognition from ECOISLA and the FADEMUR RESPONSIBLE LABEL. Live the La Jaira de Ana Experience: Visit Us This award motivates us to continue working with passion for what is ours. We want to invite you to come and see for yourself the quality and values behind this great project. Come and Meet Us: Book a family visit, sign up for our cheesemaking workshops, or become a farmer for a day (conviértete en granjera o granjero por un día). We look forward to sharing the experience with you!

The role of women in the rural areas of the Canary Islands

For centuries, women in the rural Canary Islands have been fundamental pillars of the islands’ economy, culture, and social life. Though often unseen, their impact has been crucial in agriculture, livestock farming, and the transmission of traditions. This article seeks to explore the historical and contemporary roles of rural women in the Canary Islands, their evolution, and the challenges they face today. The history of women in the rural context of the Canaries is marked by the constant struggle to balance domestic duties with their roles in agriculture and livestock farming. From the earliest settlements, women have been key to sustaining the family economy. Despite their importance, rural women have historically been relegated to the background, both in historical records and in political and economic decision-making. The role of women in agriculture From pre-Hispanic times to the present day, women have been at the forefront of agricultural work in the Canary Islands. Crops such as potatoes, maize, and cereals have depended on their hardworking hands. These women have not only planted and harvested but also played a key role in preserving traditional agricultural techniques, which today form part of the Canary Islands’ cultural heritage. In addition to agriculture, livestock farming has been another sector where women have played a prominent role. Responsibilities related to animal care, such as looking after goats and sheep, were shared, yet women often shouldered the majority of the daily workload. Indeed, even today, in many rural parts of the Canaries, it is they who keep the tradition of artisanal cheese production alive. Despite their contributions, rural women have had to struggle for generations to secure their rights. In the 19th century, the first movements emerged to improve working conditions and ensure fairer access to resources. It wasn’t until the 20th century that feminist movements began to have a tangible impact on rural policies on the islands. Developments in the 20th Century The 20th century marked a turning point for rural women in the Canaries. From the 1960s and 70s, with the advent of mass tourism and modernisation, many women left rural areas in search of better job opportunities in cities. However, many others chose to stay and adapt to the new times, incorporating innovations into agricultural and livestock practices. Today, women in the rural Canary Islands are not only farmers or livestock breeders but also lead entrepreneurial initiatives that promote sustainability and innovation in the sector. Rural tourism and the production of local goods, such as wines and cheeses, have opened new avenues for female entrepreneurship. Rural women are leading projects that combine tradition with innovation. The use of sustainable technologies in agriculture, such as efficient irrigation systems and organic production, are initiatives that many rural businesswomen have embraced to tackle the challenges of climate change. Female entrepreneurship in rural areas has grown significantly in recent years. Many women have transformed small agricultural operations into successful businesses. Local product fairs and online sales have made it easier for these businesswomen to reach a much wider market. Education and training Access to education has been a key factor in transforming the role of rural women. In recent decades, training and skills development programmes have enabled many women to acquire new skills to compete in a global market, from mastering new technologies to managing rural enterprises. Additionally, the Canary Islands government has implemented various programmes to support rural women, offering them access to financing, business advice, and training in new technologies. These programmes aim to reduce the gender gap and encourage female leadership in rural settings. Challenges facing rural women Despite these advances, rural women in the Canaries continue to face significant challenges. Gender inequality persists in many rural areas. Women often have limited access to resources such as land, water, and financing. This economic and social gap restricts their ability to develop and achieve autonomy. Beyond economic disparity, rural women often encounter social barriers, such as a lack of recognition for their work and traditional gender roles that still prevail in many rural communities. The role of the new generation The new generations of rural women are better prepared and have a more open outlook towards change. These young women are keen to break away from traditional moulds and seek new forms of participation in the rural economy. Furthermore, digitalisation has opened new doors for rural women. From online sales of local products to promoting their businesses on social media, access to technology is a key tool for their empowerment.
